Job Title: Director of Engineering (Switchboard Manufacturing)

Work Arrangement: Onsite – Monday-Friday

Position Summary

Our Client seeks a highly motivated and results-oriented Director of Engineering for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in the Switchboard Industry who is responsible for overseeing the development, design, and execution of both electrical and mechanical systems within switchboard products. This leadership role requires a strong technical background in both electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as the ability to manage cross-functional teams, innovate, and drive projects from concept to production. The Director will ensure that all engineering projects align with industry standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements while optimizing cost, performance, and efficiency across the design and manufacturing processes.

It is a full-time, exempt position, and the candidate will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define and implement the engineering strategy for electrical and mechanical systems in switchboards, ensuring alignment with company objectives and industry trends.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in the design, development, and integration of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, regulatory requirements, and market trends, incorporating them into product development and design.
  • Lead and mentor a team of electrical and mechanical engineers, providing guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities
  • Foster a collaborative environment that bridges the gap between electrical and mechanical engineering, ensuring cohesive product development
  • Oversee project timelines, resource allocation, and deliverables across both engineering disciplines
  • Oversee the development of electrical switchboard systems, ensuring that both electrical and mechanical components work seamlessly together
  • Direct the design and testing of mechanical structures, power distribution, and protection systems in switchboards
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory standards (e.g., IEC, UL, ANSI) and customer-specific requirements while balancing manufacturability, durability, and cost.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications.
  • Monitor project milestones, identify risks, and address technical challenges to maintain progress.
  • Coordinate closely with production teams to ensure that designs are feasible for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, including safety protocols, product quality guidelines, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure that both electrical and mechanical designs adhere to internal controls, industry standards, and certifications.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance teams to conduct product testing and resolve any technical or safety issues.
  • Drive efficiency and optimization in engineering processes, from design to manufacturing, to reduce costs and improve product delivery timelines.
  • Implement advanced engineering tools and systems to improve design accuracy, testing, and validation processes.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging the team to identify and act on opportunities for process enhancements.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to executive management, offering strategic insights on electrical and mechanical engineering initiatives.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure that engineering solutions meet business needs.
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, events, and customer meetings, showcasing innovations and technical expertise.

Skills, Requirements, and Specifications

  • 15+ years of experience in electrical engineering, focusing on switchboards, switchgear, or power distribution systems.
  • 7+ years of experience in a leadership or managerial role, managing both electrical and mechanical engineering teams.
  • Deep understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, including power systems, structural design, and thermal management.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD), electrical simulation software (e.g., ETAP), and other relevant engineering tools.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with internal teams, executives, clients, and suppliers.
  • Experience with product certifications, testing, and compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEC, UL, ANSI).
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with electrical system integration and coordination with mechanical design teams.

Primarily office-based, with occasional visits to manufacturing facilities, customer sites, and industry events.

  • May require hands-on involvement in prototype testing, product troubleshooting, and onsite problem resolution.
  • Proven track record of leading engineering teams and managing large-scale projects.
  • Experience with product design, development, and compliance testing in the electrical industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of switchboard design, power systems, and industry standards (e.g., IEC, UL, NEC).
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or ETAP.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Effective communication skills for technical teams, executives, and clients.
  • Familiarity with digital technologies such as IoT, smart switchgear, or energy management systems.
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of electrical testing, fault analysis, and system protection.
  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel to manufacturing facilities, client sites, and industry events.
  • May require hands-on involvement in prototype testing or product troubleshooting.

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification is an advantage.

This is a critical commercial role focused on identifying and selling federal transferable tax credits to corporate entities with meaningful tax appetite. You will partner closely with the Tax Credit Vertical Lead and have analyst-level support for underwriting, structuring, and market analysis.
